Challenge: Innovation in Diagnosing the Youngest Patients

SENDD (System for Early Neurological Deviation Detection) is an innovative system that uses artificial intelligence to analyze spontaneous infant movements, enabling early detection of potential neurodevelopmental deviations. Developed in collaboration between Poliklinika Sabol and TIS Grupa, SENDD is the first such system in Croatia and beyond. It is designed to provide families with access to top-tier medical diagnostics without the need for physical visits to healthcare facilities.

The system has been recognized as one of Croatia’s most innovative high-tech products, as evidenced by winning the prestigious Zlatno jaje (Golden Egg) Award for E-Innovation, given to projects that bring measurable change and leverage technology to improve society.

 

The project’s goal was to provide healthcare professionals with a unique solution for assessing infant developmental quality by analyzing spontaneous movements in early infancy to detect high-risk neurodevelopmental deviations or predict normal outcomes in at-risk children. The process is based on a medically validated method and classification of spontaneous movement assessment, GMA (General Movement Assessment).

During research and development, the highest ethical and security standards were followed. However, the project's realization presented several specific challenges:
• Collecting high-quality video materials:

Infant recordings had to meet high technical and diagnostic standards.

• GDPR compliance and privacy:

The system must be fully aligned with GDPR, ensuring the secure storage and management of sensitive data.

• Defining key movements for analysis:

Precise identification of movement tracking points was required while allowing room for future system improvements.

• Remote collaboration:

The project was carried out during the pandemic, requiring team adaptations and intensive remote communication.

Approach: Combining Technology and Medical Expertise

The SENDD project was developed in partnership with Poliklinika Sabol, with TIS Grupa as the technological leader. Our approach was based on integrating advanced technologies such as computer vision, machine learning, and deep neural networks, using programming languages and tools like Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, .NET, and Angular.

The project was divided into two key phases:

 

  1. Research Phase (08/2020 – 02/2022):
  • Video materials of infants were collected and analyzed in collaboration with Poliklinika Sabol, focusing on the quality of recordings needed for diagnostics.
  • Various AI/ML algorithms were explored and tested to identify optimal solutions for movement analysis.
  • External evaluators and medical experts validated the accuracy and reliability of the research findings.
  1. Development Phase (02/2022 – 08/2023):
  • A comprehensive video annotation system was developed, including software tailored for medical professionals and parents.
  • Mobile applications for iOS and Android were created, enhancing user experience and simplifying video recording and uploading.
  • The system underwent extensive testing, achieving a negative predictive value (NPV) of approximately 90%, meaning high accuracy in detecting potential issues and an extremely low likelihood of failing to identify problematic movements.

Results: Expanding the Reach and Accessibility of Diagnostics

The SENDD system has significantly transformed how Poliklinika Sabol delivers its services:
Increased accessibility:

More than 500 infants from Croatia, the EU, and beyond have been analyzed using SENDD, giving families from remote areas access to top-tier diagnostics.

Time and resource savings:

Parents no longer needed to travel for early diagnostics, allowing doctors to focus on interpreting data.

Sustainability:

Although the project has formally concluded, Poliklinika Sabol and TIS Grupa continue to invest in SENDD, ensuring its further development as a private initiative.

Challenge:

TIS GRUPA was a key partner in two national projects for the introduction of the euro – first in Slovenia and then in Croatia. These projects required intensive collaboration with the largest banks in both countries, with a special focus on high complexity and precision in implementation. The main challenge was the replacement of the country’s primary currency, which required a seamless transition to the new currency without affecting daily transactions, especially in the financial sector.

Solution:

TIS GRUPA was engaged to provide essential support to the IT coordination of the project, which was responsible for administrative and technical support throughout the entire process of introducing the euro. Alan Budak, head of the project management department, was part of the team working on this project. Although TIS GRUPA was not involved in the early phases, the team quickly became an important partner through its expertise, positive attitude, and team dynamics.

Key components of the solution included:

1. Support to IT Coordination: TIS GRUPA took on the role of “assisting the IT coordinator” to support the execution of complex tasks. Due to the specificity of the project, the team was responsible for collecting, processing, and presenting key indicators, ensuring that all stakeholders were regularly informed about the progress. The automation of reporting systems helped efficiently track the project.

 

2. Testing and Quality Assurance: Due to the high complexity, the project involved extensive testing of all modules, including integration tests, performance tests, security checks, regression tests, and quiet production. TIS GRUPA was responsible for creating test plans, monitoring testing, reporting progress, and ensuring that any issues were promptly addressed.

 

3. Communication and Collaboration: Given the number of departments involved, it was important to establish an effective communication style. TIS GRUPA helped streamline communication between IT, business analysis, operations, and project management teams, ensuring that the project progressed according to plan.

 

4. Monitoring Progress: Alan’s team regularly reported on progress, identified deviations from the plan, and helped implement necessary corrections. With their assistance, the project was successfully implemented, with minimal disruptions to the daily operations of the participating banks despite the high complexity of the currency change.

In 2023, TIS GRUPA was tasked with supporting one of Croatia’s largest banks in integrating the Instant Payments service into its portfolio. Instant payments, a revolutionary financial service, enable users to transfer money instantly—within 20 seconds—across banks participating in the NKSInst system. The project’s challenges included ensuring seamless integration, aligning with a large number of stakeholders, and meeting strict deadlines for full implementation by mid-December, all while ensuring a secure and user-friendly system.

Solution:

TIS GRUPA was engaged to support the deployment of Instant Payments, a service that allows users to send funds instantly within the same bank or to another bank within the same clearing system. The service, which is available 365 days a year, is designed to make money transfers both fast and secure. The key to the project’s success was the involvement of external project management, which led to the engagement of Alan Budak as the external project manager. Alan, who heads TIS’s project management department, played a crucial role in coordinating the implementation and ensuring timely delivery.

The main components of the solution included:

1. Operational Project Management: Alan Budak was responsible for overseeing the operational aspects of the project, including controlling deadlines, managing the project budget, ensuring quality through careful planning and testing, and facilitating proactive communication with multiple stakeholders. His ability to manage complex processes, coupled with his experience, ensured a smooth and timely rollout of the Instant Payments service.

 

2. Stakeholder Coordination: The project involved a significant number of departments within the bank, which required effective coordination to avoid delays. Alan worked closely with project sponsors, the steering committee, and various functional, business, and technical teams to ensure the project remained on track. Regular updates on progress, identified risks, and deviations from the plan were communicated to stakeholders, ensuring that obstacles were swiftly addressed.

 

3. Multilingual Communication: The project required collaboration with international experts, which introduced complexities in communication. Alan’s team managed these challenges efficiently, ensuring that communication was clear and consistent across multiple languages and regions. SEPA (eng. Single Euro Payments Area) is a unique payment area currently covering 34 EU member states, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Monaco and San Marino. The main objective is to establish a single payment system throughout the Eurozone and other European countries that have a national currency but also accept payments in euros through a common SEPA infrastructure.

FinTIS application enables business entities to use the payment service – direct debit under SEPA rules – as a payee. The payment service makes it easy for business users to monitor their customers’ liquidity and collection of receivables, whether for individuals or legal entities. The application can be used as a service to upgrade your own applicable or as a complete standalone solution.

FinTIS can be used among both small and large business users, with the ability to define the functionality that they want to use.

Payment is made and received on equal terms, rights and obligations, regardless of the location of the payer and payee.

SEPA has two payment instruments in the payment system: SEPA credit transfers and SEPA direct debit, which can be used in Croatia since 2017. This type of payment is based on the signed consent given by the payer to the payee, and represents a more secure and efficient way of execution payment transactions within a defined period. More efficient liquidity management and transparent collection of accounts receivable, as well as a standardized file format for defining transactions are just some of the benefits of this type of payment.

Efficient, fast and reliable solution

Collaborating with the Financial Agency (FINA) in Croatia, TIS Group has developed FinTIS, a solution that simplifies collecting and managing payer consent, provides support for creating a SEPA direct debit order, and allows the conversion of different sources (Excell table data or web service) into a SEPA direct debit order.

FinTIS was created in need to respond the needs of businesses in the Republic of Croatia to easily and efficiently connect their IT systems to SEPA direct debit. This solution enables legal entities in Croatia to manage receivables more efficiently as payee, and carelessness bills paying to the payers.
